What makes a strategy game actually work on a phone
Strategy on a touchscreen sounds like a compromise, and often it is. But the games that get it right share a few habits worth pointing at.
The first is a good confirm step. Nothing kills a tactics game faster than a misplaced unit from a stray tap. Ironvale Tactics gets this right — you preview a move, then confirm it, so accidents are rare.
The second is readable information at a glance. On a phone you can't hover over things, so ranges, threats, and terrain have to be visible without menus. If I have to dig three taps deep to see an enemy's reach, the game is fighting me.
And the third is respecting session length. Mobile strategy lives in short bursts, so smart games save state mid-mission and let you step away. The best ones feel like they were built for the phone, not squeezed onto it.
